An estimated 170 University employees attended Penn State General Stores Open House on October 8 to learn about the University-exclusive office and janitorial products available at significant discounts.

This is the General Stores’ second open house.  The first one in 2011 had about 140 University employees attend.  General Stores carries a wide selection of products that are discounted up to 75 percent off the manufacturer’s list price for University employees.

The open house brought in office and janitorial supply vendors and a gas cylinder vendor to answer questions about and discuss their supplies.  Additionally, the break room was used as a training room to show customers how to shop and fill out order and return forms online.

General Stores delivers products to all 24 Penn State campuses.  They hope to hold more open houses in the future to show new customers how the operation works.  Along with University Park employees attending, there was also a group from Penn State Abington.

“The turnout was excellent.  A few vendors from all areas of our warehouse made it a good mix for the entire University community to be involved,” Assistant Manager of General Stores John Lower said.

Customers in attendance also had the chance to win raffle prizes that included multifunctional printers, office supply baskets, and football helmet tape dispensers.

“We deliver right to the desktop.  We have excellent delivery drivers who keep the service above and beyond,” Lower said.  “With the overall package, we stay competitive in getting the university the best prices.”
